Other things to do
Balboa Island & Peninsula and Newport Beach
The town of Newport Beach nestles along the California coast. At the entrance of the bay, are Balboa Peninsula and Balboa Island. These are filled with little restaurants and shops, homes, boats, and an original 1936 ferris wheel. South of the bay, along the coast are beaches, nature areas, and restaurants. And inland, there is upscale shopping and culture.
Local culture
Newport Beach is home to the Orange County Museum of Art, Discovery Cube’s Ocean Quest, the Summer Concert Series, and the indie film Lido Theatre.
Outdoor activities
Any summer activity you can imagine is probably here. So far, I’ve found hiking, sailing, paddle boarding, tennis, kayaking, bicycles, electric bicycles, whale watching, deep sea fishing, golf, surfing, swimming, walking, and napping venues for you to try! There are lots of places that will rent you equipment or take you out for a few hours – just click the links above.
Theme parks
If you’re a kid between the ages of 0 and 112, there’s a theme park for you. Within an hour or so of Newport, you’ll find Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
Dining
Newport Beach has every kind of restaurant from little specialty joints on Balboa Peninsula, to super fancy clubs. You won’t starve here! I’ve chosen a handful of options that look really good: The Cannery, Patty Macs, Fly and Fish Oyster Bar, Javier’s Cantina, The Crab Cooker, Harborside Restaurant, and The Beachcomber Cafe.
